Garden Promises

By paul Bluestein

I smile at the Early Girls and Lemon Boys
hiding among the caged vines,
watchful for encroaching butternut squash.
Impatient for the first harvest,
I pluck recipes from open books
as I sip morning coffee and imagine
that first taste of a summer-ripe tomato,
red and warm as the sun
rising up from the August haze.
